A question about the movie "the town"

  • In the town film by ben afflack, we see a scene where they rob an armored truck, aka bread truck, which is made out of metal. In the scene one guard grabs one robber and says to the other robber "come on out I have your friend, etc." the non-grabbed Robert comes out of the truck and then there is a short sequence of tension before the non-grabbed robber shoots the guard, and based on the now laying-down guard's body language, appears to have killed him.

My question is this, is body armor really that weak? The robber appears to shoot him in the chest and we don't see any blood, and the guard is very clearly wearing a bullet proof vest over his shirt. The robber shot like 5 bullets right into the bullet proof vest and the guard died. Was this intentional? it must have been because how could they have missed something so obvious? Are bullet proof vests really that useless in real life? None of the characters even say anything about it like "wow how did he die? they must be wearing fake vests!" or anything like that.
